A toasted onion and poppy seed bagel topped with hummus, chervil, rocket and tomato; a perfect mix of freshness and solidity for a cold morning

A month or so ago I pulled out all the shot rocket and chervil from one of the raised beds, leaving behind only the cut and come again lettuces from the salad mix, or so I thought. The whole patch is now covered in a lawn of young plants. Beautiful.

Will be interesting to see how long it survives…  self seeded parsley always goes all winter. These are in quite a sheltered spot so I have hopes for my liquoricey little friends. Love over wintering

The equinox occurs at 4.03am tomorrow morning. A time of balance and harvest. Here we have broccoli, kale, leeks, carrots, apples and even finally courgettes in great abundance. The peas and beans are still producing though more slowly and it’s time for brambles in the smoothies.

Reading in front of the log fire has replaced swimming as the favourite leisure pastime of the moment. Phil Rickman books are still being delved into. The Bones of Avalon is a new style for him, a historical novel and wonderful Glastonbury mystery set in the times of Elizabeth 1st, seen through the eyes of John Dee. He also writes for children and young people as Thom Madley – Marco’s Pendulum is gripping some here, apparently well diffused with humour throughout

Was amazed to notice this morning, that one of the tiny melons has swelled into a potentially viable fruit! Back when planting, I did read about the ‘proper’ way to grow melons, cutting them right back and only leaving 2 or 3 fruits for the energy and nutrients to focus upon. But the plant vined all round, with lots of lovely little pea sized melons and was so beautiful that I didn’t have the heart to do that.
