band of brothers

Had quite an academic learning type day today. We sat and reviewed our maths learning from the past year and then warmed up slowly with Potty Professors and some of the harder magic squares from here. The children still expect and worry that they’re going to get it all wrong, a leftover from school, though it is [...]

birthday and boxes

Danger School! shamelessly stolen from Paula yet again :) It’s long but bravely speaking truths. Daniel is now 14 :) Had a nice lunch out on the day and some fun. Other that that it’s been all boxes and phonecalls to solicitors. Visited our new house again yesterday… all very exciting. Things may well be quiet for a [...]

geometry

in the form of festive crafts – how perfectly HE :) Our 20 faced shapes – icosahedrons – from all free crafts. We stapled them rather than using glue but that did turn out quite tricky, having to flatten them out all the time. Our walks just get more beautiful as the nights draw in… Related [...]

writing and books

We do seem to be talking a lot about writing lately. A couple of nights ago I read the children the updated (1999) introduction to Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot (1975) about the early influences in his writing career and childhood. They were quite fascinated (and a little scared!). Today we did a Dr. Who writing [...]

balls

A couple of images from yesterday’s walk:  Today kids played Trilemma and then we dug out this Hyperlauncher kit that weve had for a while. We read up on Polymers in this wonderful Science Dictionary and then got to making the balls :) Great fun. Once we’d made enough and let them dry out a bit [...]

Halloween quizzes and stories

Virtual pumpkin carving - intend doing the real thing today too… and this falling sand game is a bit odd but very ‘moreish’ – just play with it and see! Halloween quizzes – Easy, Tricky or Fiendish - sent by my sister         Kids wrote spooky stories this morning. Both very good. Was especially impressed by [...]

flood and fire

We watched this great little film thing on the Fibonacci Sequence here from Brain Pop (saw this at Aspie Home Education) and Daniel has been learning Japanese with this CD Rom lent by friends – great fun with the games. Yesterday’s floods in the woods and today’s trip to a Wickerman festival… mouseover for little comments [...]

very windy

don’t know if it’s the hurricane tail or not. Did lots of indoor things today. Charlotte had some Eerie English and Momentous Maths – she still really likes those, have ordered a couple more in the series. Dan was on 2xl again. Kids now play a maths game while I hoover round first thing. Today [...]

throwing plants into the equation

Had a very good game of Equate today – kinda like Scrabble but with equations. I liked that – seemed more like thinking for yourself as opposed to doing the sums set by someone else. You end up doing a lot of mental calculation to find an equation that you can do with your pieces. [...]
