I had my first taste of blackcurrents this year, I found they had a very tangy taste but nice! I wish my bledner could pulverize avocados or I would make it.

  2. Penny says:

Oh, that looks so good! And John has just brought back a stack of blackcurrants from the allotment…

mmmmmm. I love blackcurrants (and redcurrants). They are so difficult to find in the shops…which is why I have 3 blackcurrant and a redcurrant bush! :) I harvested mine last night and good job as the dog has now taken to peeing on every bush! I’ve frozen mine until i decide what to do with them.

Smoothie looks delicious and sounds very nutritious! The blackcurrant seeds are really high in both omega 6 and omega 3 plus all that amazing vitamin C! Also, the berries taken juiced were traditionally used to treat diarrhoea.

I think most blenders would do avocado if it’s nice and ripe – the flesh should just be soft and creamy then. Thinking about it, some blenders would not do the nuts – they might have to be ground up first in a coffee grinder.

What little vitamin bursts they are! they’re lovely chucked in a smoothie in frozen state – make it all icy cold. Smoothie mix can of course be made into ice lollies :)

  5. cat says:

If you had an ice cream maker it could probably be put in that too.

  6. Lucy says:

do not have one but yes, I think it would be good as ice cream :)

  7. Mel says:

My blender can do nuts easily but it really struggles with avocados for reasonsI cant understand, I’ve tried chopping them finely too or buying over ripe ones. It’s crazy.

  8. Lucy says:

that is odd – maybe something to do with the shape of the blades? you could put more banana in the smoothie instead :)

  9. Mel says:

Ooh good thinking batman! I may have to add recurrents though my blackcurrents have mysteriously vanished… I’ve been having to pay the Blackbird raisins as protection against my fruit.. Im thinking they havent kept their side of the bargain :P

  10. Riaz says:

I have always had a liking for blackcurrants but they are quite hard to find fresh in Hampshire. I tried the tinned blackcurrants from Aldi but found them too sour for my tastes although they are usable in desserts.

  11. Lucy says:

we have blackbirds eating ours too – they are nesting in one of the sheds! Birds taking your fruit can have unexpected benefits though – we have blackcurrants and raspberries growing in the track by the house which must have been sown by birds, and I recently found a new small gooseberry bush by the fence :D

never tried tinned bcs – they do seem a rarity in the shops :( shame when they’re so easy to grow, but I suppose a bit time consuming to pick commercially…

  12. cat says:

I think blackcurrants are rare because Mr Ribenna buys them all. They do seem impossible to buy.

Fortunately I haven’t had problems with the birds this year but the dog has eaten most of the gooseberries and about half the blackcurrants. He just plucks them straight off.

  13. Lucy says:

Toby has eaten some strawberries that are growing in a pot on the patio but he hasn’t taken any fruit off bushes or plants in the ground (that I know of!)…
