Drying some nettles for tea this morning, having worked out that it’s a bit ridiculous how we buy nettle tea (lovely as it is) when we are surrounded by them! Will finish them off in the dehydrator later.

Those chics are beautiful and adorable! With Nettle tea is it literally a case of just drying them and adding hot water when needed?

I may pick some from the moors when I go up tonight. Its really annoying, a perfect garden is wasted on us, no weeds grow – at all! Yet I want them to lol! I’ve always done things backwards.
Home dried herbs just taste completely different and I love that when I pour boiling water over my home dried plants/herbs/weeds they end up looking freshly picked and so beautiful in the bottom of the cup. I never get that with ones I have bought.

no, I didn’t know you could use blackcurrant leaves – they are all heavily laden with developing fruit just now. must try that!
The leaves are good for coughs and gum disease…although they taste aromatic as well and make a tannin rich tea. They are a ‘tonic’ tea just like nettles.
My blackcurrant bushes aren’t quite big enough yet for me to pinch leaves off of.
If you have lots of brambles nearby use the young leaves too…a tonic but also good for any diarrhoea and nice mixed with young raspberry leaves.
There is so much to use in the garden and hedgerows at the moment I dont have enough hours in the day to gather it all!!

There are just so many things which grow in our gardens which are useful as medicines, vegetables or just a refreshing tea and it is so easy to overlook them…but the poor weeds and plants just aren’t safe in my garden! I have an evening of harvesting planned
raspberry & bramble leaf, cleavers, beech leaves, nettle, dandelion, lady’s mantle and hawthorn leaf…phew!

ooh, I have a recipe for nettle and blackcurrant leaf cordial in a book somewhere. I’ll dig it out. I imagine it would be wonderfully refreshing with some sparkling water. Can’t face drinking hot tea on a day like this!
sounds very interesting. I once made elderflower cordial but it went mouldy after a few days despite my trip to the chemist to obtain citric acid too

Your crops are looking good. I wonder if we WILL get a good summer. They’re forecasting one, but as they were so wrong with last summer and winter, ah hae ma doots!
I think that is the key to gaining confidence with wild food…start with the ones that you can definitely identify and progress from there. We have it instilled in us from such a young age not to eat wild things, and to an extent rightly so as there are many which are genuinely poisonous, but this wariness continues into adulthood…it’s such a shame. There is such a wealth of food and medicine surrounding us in nature, both in cities and the countryside, that it just does not make sense to pass it by. Start with nettles and dandelion and build your confidence from there…
