a day in the trees

trees in the forest

Had a wonderful home ed group visit with the Rangers at Speymouth Forest – huge turnout. We all always learn so much from the rangers – this time it was about survival if you’re lost, priorities of air, shelter, water, food, fire etc. The kids spent the best of part of two hours designing and building shelters in several groups with no adult help or advice allowed. They did really well, enjoying using the hacksaws and large snippers to cut down rhododendrons and (I think) western hemlock trees as they’re non-native and invasive.

Then it was onto kindling gathering to light a fire in a safe place - they had to collect three different sizes of stick for it – more advanced fire starting than were used to!

It was amazing to note how much the group has grown over the years… and lovely to see some people who are now at college or giving school a try (it’s the school holidays here at the mo)

Charlotte was most delighted to come home to this beautiful bed (once you’re woman sized, it’s not much fun clambering into a cabin bed!). We bought a standard divan and this beautiful headboard. Dan does have a new one too, his old bed having literally fallen apart, but it’s all wooden and not very photogenic, nothing sparkly for him!
