archeaology

Home ed group trip to the Birnie archaeological dig. Archaeologist gave us a very interesting talk about the site and finds and then it was off to the trenches where 1st year archaeo students were excavating an iron-age burnt down roundhouse:

sieving

We got to sieve the earth removed by diggers, quite a few things were found such as hammer stones, flints, stones used to make jewellery…

getting in there!

There’s an open day at the site Sunday 7th September 10-5 with tours for both children and adults, re-enactments and arts/crafts.

Many of the artefacts from Birnie are on display at Elgin Museum, so we headed there in the afternoon – a brilliant place, highly recommend it. Has fossils, rocks, Pictish and Roman things on the lowest level and stuff gets newer as you get higher in the building: great Victorians display; computer programme about the museum; exhibit on Ramsay MacDonald; Samurai bits and even a shrunken head (made me feel slightly ill that). Wonderful art at the top.

Birnie coins etc.

Charlotte photographed the mysterious Kellas cat:
