lion in the grass

Charlotte got an audiobook from the library – Fire, Bed and Bone – which she insisted we all listen to as it was so good. It really was. It’s set during the peasants rebellion of 1381, seen through the eyes of a dog – bit of a tear jerker. Seems like were going both directions in history away from Henry’s wives as we have now moved onto Elizabeth I also from David Starkey. Also very good. Progressing with The Tenant of Wildfell Hall – this shared reading seems to have become an evening habit now, everyones reading aloud abilities deepening.

Yesterday I got the children to write out the verbs etre and avoir – felt it would be useful though our course does not require it. Lovely home ed synchronicity happened with the delivery of Etre et Avoir from tesco dvd rental – a documentary about a small French country school which was fascinating. We all noticed many differences to UK schools – much more emphasis on being polite and a good person. The teacher obviously genuinely cared about the kids, though he was rather stern at times. We were all a bit horrified at the mother who slapped her child really hard each time he got a time table wrong! No wonder he seemed to be the school bully… Was good for our French too with some of the basic things the children in the class were learning like reading and ami et amie. A charming dvd – don’t think I’ll forget little JoJo in a hurry :)  Children still finding extra French practice on youtube such as this Lion King bit.

We all did lots of gardening yesterday afternoon: watering, weeding, planting of more sunflowers and peas - first really hot day of summer. Pouring and cold today. Took lots of photos of various things growing – they’re up on flickr. Will just put up this one of Lion keeping cool in the long grass with Toby’s nose coming down to find him :)
