cold frame and pumpkins

We thought a cold frame was a good idea for Dan’s pumpkins but what a price they are – especially considering many of them are just glorified boxes with see-through lids… so it was off to the treasure trove sheds again. Calls of ‘I’ve found panes of glass’ and ‘ooh, windows’ resounded round the garden.shed booty

Then on with construction – learning about levels. It’s just as well Davie was here to supervise the project. I would probably just have nailed the four windows together and laid a pane of glass on top (he thought I was joking when I said that but I really wasn’t!!).

Then Charlotte and I headed out to the garden centre (have found a new, very reasonable one nearby) for growbags to fill the frame with… Charlotte bought some strawberry plants too (edit in 2009, these have now spread over a large area, 3 little plants turning into at least 50)

September:

Daniel’s pumpkins have gone wild in the country – here they are breaking free from the cold frame:

they are actually very small, probably should have hampered their spread and number but it's been great to watch!

they made very good soup in time too – recipe here
