sound of music

We did lots of solar system stuff yesterday: jigsaws, worksheets – some from kidsastronomy.com but I searched around all over and we had colouring from Nasa and crosswords from abcteach – and art which is ongoing. In the afternoon we all watched the Sound of Music together – ah more tear jerking moments for me. Really enjoyed seeing the kids like the film too and it was all new to them so more exciting. Discussions about nuns/convents/abbeys, the Third Reich, Switzerland, Austria and music developed from it too. It is amazing how kids just learn when you are just there with them giving them full attention, regardless of what you’re doing

This morning we received our Nevada postcard and Charlotte researched that. Coloured in Nevada and Arizona on their maps and then we went on to play with these interactive state games which are a little addictive. Kids have been returning to those on and off seeing their scores improving. Good way of learning the whereabouts of the states though – I’m certainly getting a good education! This afternoon we played scrabble which was quite good fun, Charlotte was delighted that she was able to make the word ‘fart’ – simple pleasures. Lots of good mental arithmatic practice totting up the scores too though we cheated and used a calculator for the final ones – but that’s a valid skill to have too surely

It keeps raining and it’s really cold. Don’t feel that bothered about it though – we can just go with it and do more indoorsy things on days like this and beaches etc. when it finally gets summery again. Off for walk now though as there seems to be a sunny interlude.

Charlotte’s having immense fun doing this science workbook – goes off and does it by herself! Not the most challenging book in the world but she is picking up bits and pieces of knowledge from it and clarifying already known stuff.
