Feels like it’s been an odd couple of days somehow – not because anything strange has happened, just odd feeling. A baby wood pigeon appeared in the garden yesterday and just sat there, no sign of any parents. They do nest in a large tree nearby. It wandered off through the fence in the afternoon so we thought it had maybe gone home. But this morning the children noticed it again just sitting looking a bit out of it in the garden. Went up to it and it didn’t fly away or seem that bothered. Gave it some water and food which it ignored. Always find these kind of things a bit of a dilemma. If I take it somewhere and it can’t be released am I not just condemning it to life in a cage? Would it be better to just let nature take it’s course? Dithered about and then phoned a local vet who runs a wildlife charity for advice. So ended up taking it up there to be assessed and hopefully let go once well again. Helping birds really is this man’s speciality so I think we made the right decision. It was surprisingly unfazed by it’s journey in the car in a cat basket, just sat looking around.
Pigeon update: spoke to the vet on the phone and there’s nothing wrong with the pigeon except that he’s very thin and weak. Apparantly baby pigeons sometimes get this way after their parents stop feeding them. So he’s going to be fattened up in the sanctuary and then let go in the vet’s garden where he feeds the birds and can keep an eye on him
So my academic plans for today went a bit pear shaped with all this which leads nicely into other news (oh so corny). Our pear and apple upside-down cake recipe is going to be used in the 4th series of Come Dine with Me on C4 and will be credited on their website. Hope it turns out well – how embarrassing to see one of my recipes go wrong on TV or not be liked?
** edit in – the guy had never made a cake before, didn’t grease the tin and it all fell apart!!!
