sea lettuce

A little anniversary for us today – why am I so good at remembering these dates? Two years ago today I took Daniel out of state school and got our GP to sign him off indefinitely until we decided what to do. I also informed the headmaster that he would not be back until totally better and the bullying was dealt with. The latter never happened but thankfully the former did dramatically – though it is still ongoing. I don’t really feel bitter for any of this messy stuff in the past today though – more just lots of gratitude that were where we are now. Not at the stage of forgiveness to actually feel grateful to the inept and dishonest teachers who helped push us here… but progress is being made :)

And what an amazing day for Scotland in May! Clear blue skies, the slightest breeze, temp of 21 at one point. A day that clearly said, “beach”. Stuffed some bits in a cool bag and off we went for a whole 5 hours. Kids ran and climbed around on the rocks, gaining in confidence as the day went on. We did take some books with us so some more orthodox education took place – Daniel is loving Bill Bryson’s ‘Down Under‘ lent to him by a friend a couple of days ago – kept asking lots of questions about words and phrases. Charlotte had her Greek Myths with her and I am now deep in Labyrinth (I know I’ve been reading it for ages – keep getting sidetracked by other books). We also all read another chapter of Animal Farm together and talked about propaganda/what may happen next. Watched some sandmartins building their nests in the cliffs – what argumentative little birds! Talked about how much of the landscape we saw today looked timeless – no roads, cars, pylons to be seen just cliffs, rocks and sea – loved that. Charlotte did some sketching and weve gathered some sea lettuce to use in the dinner which will, I’m sure, have educational value ;) It’s currently soaking in spring water looking none too appetising.

Loving the new camera – photos come out of it looking fantastic but as soon as I resize them the quality drops and distortions appear :( However it’s not deterring me – our day, including sad one of my lovely new trainers that are so comfy (am officially old now obviously)
