trekking and chemistry

Had a maths morning today consolidating basics again and reinforcing the idea that maths is fun. Having had the opposite message blasted at us for years this takes a while to accomplish! Played the Da Vinci Code Game which is really more logical thinking than maths but good nontheless. Then Charlotte chose Magic Cauldron which is very basic but excellent practice and fun. I selected Shut the Box which was rather brief but still helped with the ‘maths is not sitting at a desk being bored and confused’ indoctrination I was going for :)

The new chemistry set was calling to us from the time of it’s delivery in the morning. So in the afternoon we started working our way through the initial experiments. Read about matter, atoms, ions etc. then moved on to making solutions. Made an emulsion of oil and water, a saturated salt solution and a very pretty blue one with copper sulphate. Charlotte did some more still life – this time cherry tomatoes which she ate once she had drawn them. We read a bit more Animal farm and had a long and very blustery walk.
