From one castle to another today. Drove up to Inverness and down to Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle. I had forgotton that you have to go right through Inverness to get there – Charlotte map-read and established that we needed to find the A82. Did really well and got right through the town only to find the bridge was closed and we had to seek out another route. Good lesson in navigation! Was a really lovely sunny day once we reached the loch, though into minus temperatures. Didn’t see Nessie though we may have captured something a little unusual in one of the photos Castle was really good – has an excellent visitor centre also. My answer to the “no school today?” question was greeted with enthusiasm. Kids enjoyed the exhibition of longbows, crossbows, castle parts, maps and the historical film. Love the way the screen slides up and curtains open at the end of the film to show the real castle standing there by the loch. Had a freezing but bright wander round the castle – what fabulous views they had from the windows! Quite awe inspiring. Then back to the restaurant for hot scotch broth. Due to it being winter and also a school day we had the film, exhibition and restaurant all to ourselves which was nice – no worrying about ‘hogging’ the fun stuff or waiting for your turn at things. Did meet a few other people going round the castle.
