pasta, beloved, postcards, books

Had a good couple of days. It poured torrentially all day yesterday so did lots of inside stuff. Did a bit of maths and English with the workbooks, then we all cooked lunch together. Corn pasta with a raw sauce and big salad – Charlotte documented it all in her cookery book. Watched an interesting programme on the history of slavery in America on the UKTV History channel. In the evening we watched ‘Beloved‘ with a bit of censoring from me with the remote control (sometimes films are 15 for good reasons) – very disturbing but moving film.Today we had a postcard from Georgia in the States so Dan looked up some facts on it to share with us – it came with lots of facts on it too. Went over to my mums for lunch… very nice. Came home and picked some of the apples from our two trees in the garden. Toby got very exited – running about the garden with an apple in his mouth! We will soon enjoy our home baked apple pie… getting no thinner ;) Another little home educating synergy thing – turned on the radio tonight while doing the dishes and the song playing was called ‘Peach Picking Time in Georgia’ – our postcard today had peaches on it. The song then went on to sing about apple picking time in Tennessee!!

RedHouse books have Horrible Histories and Horrible Science books on offer this month – £9.99 for a set of 10.

Did some work on times tables between visitors both in workbooks and then on a video. I bought a Carol Vorderman ‘Tables to pop music video which is certainly very entertaining, though perhaps not in the way the makers and Carol intended! It’s very 80′s which makes it extremely funny as it’s supposed to be ‘cool’ for kids but so isn’t now – whether it helps with remembering tables remains to be seen.

Should mention it’s National Schools Film Week in October (dates vary betwen England and Scotland) – you can get free cinema tickets sent to you, just input home educater in the order form – apparantly you can be fined if you fail to turn up so be sure about it!
