climb

A bit of an adventure today. We started off going to the library and getting lots of Roman books then headed off to climb to the Mither Tap of Bennachie. There was quite a good exhibition on wildlife and ecology in the centre which we made good use of. It’s been a lovely day but not too hot which was good as it was a hard climb in places but really beautiful. We continued following the marked path going a different way down which was interesting passing cairns and a well. We’d gone wrong somewhere and ended up in a different car park about 3 miles away from our car! We were not alone in this error, and so six of us walked the 3 miles past the Maiden Stone and on and on and on…”it must be just round the next corner”….no, just extensive winding road stretching into the distance… Got there in the end and were really appreciative of the picnic:) I was so proud of both children doing this amazing amount of walking with no complaining. I have always noticed that their fitness levels went down during school term time and improved in the holidays – not as bad at the Waldorf where they did get a lot of running about outside. Daniel was calm and collected even during the very high, slightly scary clambering over rocks – what a difference!!

It was in the car on the way home that we heard the news about the bombings in London. It’s so awful to think of things like this still happening in the world – in such contrast to this day we had of strangers being helpful and supportive to each other. We said a prayer and did a small meditation for the people involved. The cynic in me awaits the politicians using this to further their own aims.

Flumphaderries, Flanganans and the Real Book of Bennachie – by a local author and set round the mountain. Great fun novel for children with aliens, standing stones, monsters and local places with their names tweaked!
