bored, Norse and Google Earth

It’s been another glorious day so weve spent it at the beach for Davie’s last day of holiday. Played a good treasure hunt game (inspired by the ‘I’m Bored’ book – not that the kids seem to say that much anymore…) which kept everyone busy and exploring for ages. I made a list of things they had to find such as 3 pink stones, something blue, something edible, a dead creature, a crab shell, a green shell, something very old (not Dad), something disgusting, something endangered, a fossil, a shoe, a cowrie…you get the idea! We saw 3 sea slugs – what strange and marvellous creatures.

Charlotte was studying Norse Myths just before she left the Waldorf school. This is something we have continued and it has now naturally morphed along to include Greek Myths and Legends. Yesterday the children practised something secret for a long time (I wasn’t allowed to listen or look at what they were doing!). They then performed a play of Jason and the Golden Fleece for me, Charlotte behind the sofa controlling the many soft toy actors and Daniel narrating. There was a lot of ad-lib humour built in to this but wow, they really know the story and many other connected ones. They’re now planning ‘Hercules’! The big question remains – will teddy take the lead role again??? The study of this story has led on to us looking up all about the functions of the liver and the spleen. There is some poor soul (Prometheus) who keeps getting his liver (or in some versions his spleen) ripped out by an eagle or vulture.

An amazing piece of technology, just launched – Google Earth – lets you look at satellite images from all over the world – weve been zooming around this planet today!!
